In my journey as a leader and a mentor, I have often turned to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) as a compass for self-awareness and team dynamics. This powerful tool has illuminated the diverse personality types that make up our workplaces, and more importantly, it has revealed how certain leadership behaviours, when unchecked, can veer us off course. In this article, I seek to share my insights on identifying and correcting derailing leadership behaviors and fostering a culture of growth and excellence.

Understanding the Leadership Compass: Insights from MBTI

The MBTI Assessment provides a framework for understanding individual preferences and behaviours. It has been instrumental in my personal development, allowing me to see where my natural inclinations might lead to leadership missteps. By unravelling the nuances of my personality type, I’ve gained clarity on the actions that could potentially derail my own effectiveness, and I’ve learned to navigate these tendencies with intention.

  • Self-Awareness as a Beacon: Recognizing our potential to falter is the first step toward corrective action. For me, embracing honest self-assessment has been a cornerstone of ethical leadership.
  • Balancing Strengths and Weaknesses: Every personality type has its strengths and weaknesses. My goal has always been to leverage my strengths while mitigating my weaknesses, striving for a balanced approach to leadership.

Steering Clear of Derailment: Corrective Strategies

Identifying derailing leadership behaviors is only part of the equation. The true challenge lies in consistently correcting and improving these behaviours over time.

  • Feedback Loops: Creating open and honest feedback channels has been a critical strategy. It bridges the gap between perception and reality, offering a mirror to reflect the impact of my actions.
  • Collaborative Learning: I firmly believe in the power of collective wisdom. Working collaboratively, I’ve learned from my colleagues’ diverse perspectives, which has helped me refine my leadership style.
  • Ethical Decision-Making: My commitment to ethical decision-making is at the heart of it all. This demands transparency and an unwavering adherence to the values that underpin trust and credibility in my relationships.

The Path to Leadership Excellence: A Commitment to Continuous Improvement

Leadership is not a static state but a journey of continuous growth. My commitment to addressing and correcting derailing leadership behaviors matches my dedication to fostering the same level of introspection and improvement in those I coach.

  • Tailored Development Plans: Personalized strategies for development have proven invaluable. By understanding the unique MBTI profiles of my team members, we’ve crafted tailored solutions that cater to individual growth paths.
  • Innovative Leadership Strategies: Embracing innovative strategies has been key to unlocking potential. Through this lens, I’ve transformed challenges into opportunities for leadership excellence.
